Learning about God during the time of Jesus was much more than a quiz that you marked A,B,C or D, got it right, and then moved on.  Jewish teachers at this time had no interest in someone throwing back information just for the sake of it.  They wanted to know if a person had wrestled with it, and so often when a teacher would be asked a question the answer would be another question.
